Unit 13 Typeform Modes

A typeform is a way to show that a word in print is emphasized using bold, italic, underlined, or script. A typeform indicator is a two-cell indicator. The first cell denotes which typeform will be used (bold, italic, underline, or script) and is formed with a combination of dots 4-5-6.

Type

Bold Italic Underline Script

The second cell in the typeform indicator tells if the typeform will apply to a single symbol, a word, or a whole passage and is formed with a combination of dots 1-2-3.

Extent or Action

Symbol Activates the typeform for the following braille cell only
Word Activates the typeform for the following letter/symbol sequence until the next space
Passage Activates the typeform mode until it is terminated
Terminator Terminates the mode

A 2-cell typeform indicator appears directly in front of the text it affects with no space between the indicator and the first letter/symbol.

Bold Italic Underline Script
Symbol ⠘⠆ ⠨⠆ ⠸⠆ ⠈⠆
Word ⠘⠂ ⠨⠂ ⠸⠂ ⠈⠂
Passage ⠘⠶ ⠨⠶ ⠸⠶ ⠈⠶
Terminator ⠘⠄ ⠨⠄ ⠸⠄ ⠈⠄

Typeform Formula:

Typeform Mode + Extent/Action + Letter/Symbol

Single-Letter (Symbol) Indicator

Using the typeform formula, we will apply the bold typeform to the first letter in the word "Willy."

Word Indicator

Using the typeform formula, we will apply the underline typeform to the word "best."

Passage Indicator and Terminator

The typeform passage indicator is used when the typeform applies to three or more consecutive words. It sets the typeform into effect until the mode is terminated by the typeform terminator.

The typeform terminator is placed directly after the affected passage with no space between the end of the passage and the indicator.

Using the typeform formula, we will apply the italic typeform to the passage below beginning with the first letter "F."

Typeform Extent Letter/symbol
Italic Indicator + Passage Indicator + First Letter/Symbol
+ + ⠠⠋

And we will use the same typeform formula applied after the last letter/symbol of the passage to terminate the mode.

Special Situations:

Sometimes the typeform needs to be stopped before the next space. A terminator can be inserted between the text.

Sometimes more than one typeform is used at the same time.

NOTE: The word indicator carries through the entire shortform word "should," not just the letters "sh."

NOTE: The word indicator is used rather than the single symbol indicator even though the word "not" is contracted to one letter. Otherwise it would read "not."
