Once Upon a Time

"Once upon a time…" What do these words imply? Do you picture a fantasy world, a fairy story, or a tale of evil spirits? If so, you are right. This phrase marks the start of a folktale. Its usage dates back to 1380. People use it as a tool to set the mood for those who hear it. It also tells us that a story with a moral is coming. Many similar phrases are used in other cultures. Some stories start with "A story, let it come, let it go." Others with "Here is a story! A story is here."
