Egypt is a dry, hot place. Two smaller rivers meet to form the larger Nile River that runs through it. The name Nile can be translated "great canal." The people of historic Egypt relied on water from the Nile River to stay alive. Everyone lived and worked close to the river where they could use it to water the fields. People fished, traveled, and transported goods by boat there as well. They built houses from bricks made from the mud of the Nile River. The flat roofs on the houses allowed people to sleep right outside during the hottest days.
