When you think of Washington D.C., do you imagine the White House? It is the official home to the president of the United States. In 1791, a French architect conceived plans to build a great presidential palace, but George Washington disliked it. It was Thomas Jefferson who suggested holding the contest that would declare James Hoban the winner. His plans were chosen, and he received a $500 prize. The difficult work began in 1792 but it wasn't until 1800 that then President Adams would move in. During the war of 1812, it was burned down and had to be rebuilt.
