A Great Reef
What is larger than the country of Italy? It is the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. It is the largest reef on Earth stretching over an incredible 1,429 miles. The reef is so huge that astronauts can see it from space. The reef is a rich underwater home to thousands of species of plants and animals. There are 100 species of jellyfish, 133 kinds of sharks and rays and 500 types of worms. There are even giant clams over 120 years old!
The reef is protected by Australian law. In 1975, it was made into a Marine Park. In order to best protect the reef, it was divided into different zones. Each zone has its own set of rules. The reef is such a special place that it is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Here are some fun facts about the reef:
1. The smallest fish is the Stout infant fish. It is only .2 of an inch!
2. The largest animal is the Whale Shark. It can grow up to 39 feet.
