The Lighthouse
Bruce lives in Michigan and today his class is going to visit a lighthouse. They have been studying lighthouses because Michigan has the most lighthouses of any state. It has over 150! Bruce is going to Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Here he will see how the lighthouse keeper's family lived and worked. Then he will be able to climb up the winding stairs to the top.
At school, Bruce learned that lighthouses serve an important purpose. The light at the top of the tower warns ships of a dangerous place.
Long ago, there were no lighthouses. Ships could be blown off course and onto the rocks. One of the first lighthouses built was in Egypt. It is called the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It was built around 280 BC, the lighthouse stood 450 feet high. At the top of the lighthouse was an open fire. Today, lighthouses use a big light called a Fresnel lens. The lens is made of special glass. Some lenses rotate and others flash.
