The Rainforest
There are tropical rainforests all over the world. These rainforests are always warm and very wet. They can receive 80 to 400 inches (200 to 1000 cm) of rain a year. The Amazon rainforest is located on the continent of South America. It is named after the Amazon River which is the longest river in the world. The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It is over 2.1 million square miles (5.5 million square km). It covers about 40 percent of South America. It spreads over nine countries including Brazil and Peru. The Amazon rainforest is important because it cleans the air. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the air. They make oxygen. We need oxygen to live. This is why the rainforest is nicknamed the "lungs of the world." Over half of Earth's animal and plant species live in the Amazon rainforest. The Poison Dart frog lives there. It is less than an inch to two and a half inches in length. The Anaconda snake lives there. It is the largest snake in the world. Plants found in the Amazon provide us with medicine. Some experts think there are more plants and animals to discover.
