The Playground
Cam liked Eagle Rock Elementary school as he had lots of friends. He liked his teachers. He liked the food the cafeteria served. But Eagle Rock Elementary did not have a play set. Sure there was a big field but it was empty after the old swing set and slide were taken down. The swings had creaked when anyone rode on them and there were patches of peeled paint. His teacher, Mrs. Donner, said that they were not safe. For months the spot had been left bare as there was no money in the school budget for a new play set.
At Cam's Scout meeting he asked the troop if they could help. One boy thought he could get lumber. Another girl's family built fences. The head of the troop was manager of the local home store. He thought he might be able to get the rest of the materials. Over the next five months, Cam and his Scout troop cleared the ground. They put down lots of woodchips. Then the play center was built. It had a small climbing wall and wheels which spun around. Cam thought the tire swing was the best. There were picnic tables under a big shady tree for students to eat their lunch. On opening day, all the children came. A photographer from the local paper took their photo. Cam was very proud of their work. He wondered what they could build next.
