The Collection
The school bus was coming soon. Aki did not know what to bring for the 100th day school celebration. His friend Mack was bringing a bag of coins. Mack's grandfather always gave him special quarters. Some had their own case. Aki's friend June was bringing coins too but hers were different. June told Aki that she collected pressed pennies. Every time June went on holiday she pressed a penny in a special machine. Aki liked feeling the pressed pennies. He liked the coin with the whale on it. Aki's friend Mike was bringing a bag of Halloween candy. He had been saving it for a long time. Mike said that maybe the class could eat some of it. Aki wasn't sure how good five year old candy would taste. He thought it might be better to keep it wrapped.
Aki's mom called for him to come but he still wasn't ready. Then his hand brushed against his art box. Aki knew what he wanted to do. He quickly grabbed a couple of sheets of paper and some crayons and stuffed them into his knapsack. At school Aki sat at the back table and finished his collection. When it was his turn he went up to the front of the class. This is my collection he said and he passed around his handprints. Aki had traced his hands ten times. Next year, he thought he might trace his feet.
