The Scarecrow
If you are out for a walk in the countryside, you might run into a strange figure. It is not a man or an animal. It might have on old patched clothing with a straw hat on its head. Its body will be made of hay. This strange figure is a scarecrow. For thousands of years birds ate what farmers planted. So farmers decided to make a human-like figure. They hoped it would scare the birds away and protect their crops. People make scarecrows not just in North America but around the world. Scarecrows have a long history. The earliest writing on a scarecrow dates to the 1500s. You will find mentions of scarecrows in books, plays, and movies. Perhaps the most famous scarecrow is the character in the movie, "The Wizard of OZ." Today there are many types of scarecrows. Some scarecrows are tall and scary. Others are short and sweet.
