Wildflowers
What do buttercups and violets have in common? They are both wildflowers. No one plants a wildflower. They are flowers which grow wild. In many parts of North America, wildflowers begin blooming in the spring. Wildflowers are beautiful. In history, Native Americans used wildflowers for medicine and food. Wildflowers protect the soil. Plant roots hold the soil together. When it rains, less water flows off the land which prevents the soil from wearing away. Wildflowers conserve water. Wildflowers, unlike other flowers, use little water. This is because they are adapted to the soil and the heat. Wildflowers attract bees, insects, and butterflies. Birds eat their fruits or berries. They drink their nectar. Some birds eat their seeds. Animals like frogs or lizards may live under their leaves use them for their homes. The best way to learn about wildflowers is to go on a walk in fields or forests near your home. Do not pick wildflowers, instead stop and listen. This way you will learn what animals call this area home too.
