A Seed Travels
A plant flowers to make seeds. New plants grow from seeds. Did you know that seeds travel? They do not travel by bus, plane, or car. Seeds travel in many different ways. Each plant has its own way of spreading seeds. If a seed is heavy, it will fall to the ground and if a seed is light it can float. Some seeds have special parachutes. These catch the wind. Others have wings like a glider. These help seeds fall slowly to the ground. Some seeds are hitchhikers. They have hooks. When an animal goes by, the seed hooks onto the fur. Later, it will fall off. There are seeds which can float. The tide carries the seeds to another location. Some seeds are very cool! The largest seed in the world is the sea coconut. It can measure up to 12 inches (30cm). Orchid seed pods may have over 3 million seeds. Oak trees do not grow acorns until they are 50 years old.
