A Garden Friend
Last summer, Gemma and Grant planted a garden. Gemma planted a few carrot and radish seeds. Grant wanted to win a ribbon at the Fall Fair. So he planted pumpkin seeds. He hoped one would grow to be huge. Gemma found her old watering can. The spout looked like an elephant's trunk. It sprinkled water all over the soil. Then they waited to see the tiny seeds sprout. They did not see sprouts. Instead, they saw a crow. The crow had many friends. Gemma and Grant were not happy. They were very mad. They thought the crows were going to eat all their seeds. Then they had an idea. They gathered some old clothes together. Gemma found an old straw hat with holes in it. Grant found a broom handle. They stuffed the clothes with newsprint. When the crows saw their scarecrow, they flew away. The plants grew bigger and bigger. They grew tiny carrots and radishes. Gemma and Grant thought their vegetables tasted better because they grew them themselves.
